The Elios 3 Compared to Terrestrial Laser Scanners for Stockpile Measurements

Mining and cement are two major industries that use the Elios 3 to ease inspection burdens and complexity. One of the most common applications of the Elios 3 in these sectors is for measuring stockpiles indoors or inside other assets.

This free-to-download whitepaper authored by Flyability compares how the Elios 3 performs alongside a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS). The test took place at Holcim Eclépens, a cement plant located in Switzerland. The key findings from this test were as follows:

  • The Elios 3 is 92% more efficient than traditional measurement methods
  • Results from the Elios 3 are accurate to within +/- 2cm of terrestrial laser scanners
  • The drone results had a high level of precision with an average volume of error as +/- 1%.

The whitepaper explores traditional inspection methods for stockpiles and explains the alternative process with the Elios 3. This includes the data collection process with the drone with screenshots from the drone’s flights inside the warehouse.

The volume measurements were done with software produced by FARO Connect, Flyability’s software partner for their Surveying Payload package. This process is similarly outlined in the whitepaper, ahead of the conclusion section which explains the results.
