Whitepaper: Assessing the Elios 3’s for Scan to BIM

The Elios 3’s LiDAR payload is a powerful scanning tool. Capturing over 1 million points per second with a range of over 100 meters, our Rev 7 LiDAR sensor was designed by Ouster. When mounted on the Elios 3, it is capable of capturing points to within 1 centimeter of accuracy.

As a result of the Elios 3’s detailed laser scans, our team wanted to test if it was possible to use this data for Scan to BIM processes. Scan to BIM is the process of creating and managing information for a built asset. This way of processing and displaying data is usually based on an intelligent model and/or enabled by a cloud platform. It combines several different forms of data and can be used to monitor an asset or model future additions to it. It is highly useful for major structures, such as buildings or processing plants, where there may be a need to install additional equipment or infrastructure.

This free whitepaper by Flyability explains the capabilities of the Elios 3’s Surveying Payload as well as defines the different types of BIM models. It then explains what factors make the Elios 3 appropriate for this type of data collection and a summary of how Scan to BIM can work with the Elios 3. A more detailed guide of the Scan to BIM process is available in our Whitepapers section of the website.
